Issue One - November 2004
Greetings fellow Parrot!
Weekend results:
Saturday 20 Nov vs RBSC Colts 40 over match. An early start to this game and
the Parrot captain of the day decided to take advantage of the 7 opposition
players present and we batted first. Had he decided to take advantage of the
turf consultant in the team, we may have been spared a very tricky 20 overs
on a very sticky wicket. However we persevered slowly to about 100 for 4
after 22 overs with useful contributions from Nick C. (23) and some strong
hitting from Tony T. (36). Bird Flu then reared it's ugly head and the
parrots innings was closed at a sickly all out for 131. An innings that
featured 5 ducks (ducks and parrots don't really get on that well). Fired up
and ready to go the Parrots bowled and fielded very well and we sniffed a
victory when we had the youngsters 106 for 8, but the Avian gods were not
impressed and we ultimately went down by 2 wickets Outstanding bowling from
Parrot Man of the Match Tony S. (Slatts) (3-25) and Dave C. (2-34) were the
high points of a rusty, yet disappointing Parrot debut.
Sunday 21 Nov vs YTSA 45 over match.
The Parrots welcomed back Regular Captain Steve Penney who flew down from
Chiang Mai especially for this game and after a fantastic opening night at
The Green Parrot where the laughs and vodka flowed in copious quantities the
boys were keen to right the wrongs of yesterday. Sensibly bowling first this
time we acquitted ourselves well in the field and rolled them for 123. Jon
D. and his leggies took the honours with 4-43 again assisted by Slatts (2-10
off 9 overs!) and Nick (2-18) backed up by inspirational fielding from the
skipper.
This Bird Flu epidemic (despite being past it's Nov 1 deadline) returned in
plague proportions and the Parrots were 3 for 6, then 5 for 20 before Gary
C. put us back on track with an elegant 41. With time and overs of no
concern we steadily strolled on towards the target but disaster struck with
some interesting umpiring decisions, a "Keystones Kops" run out and the
Parrots had been denied at the death again, failing by 11 runs. Man of the
Match awarded to Jon D, a few reflective beers and many of the batsmen
signing up for next Sunday's net session at Harrow School completed the
weekend.
We didn't get what we wanted results wise but the camaraderie and mateship
on the field was there in abundance, as was the encouragement from members
back at TGP such as Rodney, Kevin F-S, Dave A and all the She-Parrots (who do
not yet understand the vagaries of cricket but are learning that victories
are directly proportional to receiving parrot drinks).
Next games are on the Father's Day weekend including a game against RBSC on
the 5th with the Horses racing around the ground - great experience and best
seats in the house -more on that later...
