Issue Nine - 24th Feb 2008
Greetings and Salutations fellow Parrots!
Long long time no hear eh?
Sorry to be incommunicado for such a long time but we've had rumblings of revolutions,
coups, counter coups, peace talks, peace accords, stand offs, meetings, negotiations
and all manner of other shenanigans this season. Not Thai politics or Gaza Strip
conundrums. Oh no, much more serious than that! All this pertains to Cricket in
the Kingdom!
It seems that the dust has finally settled.
The Parrots have been all a flutter with our comrades and friends
involved
in Thailand cricket.
In a nutshell, the majority of clubs and teams over here have
politely asked for better representation from our administering body.
It's a reasonable
request. We have many fine cricket lovers (of which the Parrots boast scores) who
work hard to see cricket develop and succeed, from our own league right through
to the juniors and newcomers to cricket. We simply deserve and have earned the right
to be involved in assisting the nurturing and caretaking of the game over here and
for about three months now we have been requesting that Thailand cricket takes a
more holistic approach utilising the energy of the people that have Thailand cricket
at heart.
Check out this very accurate editorial from Martin Williamson, at
www.cricinfo.com
These interesting negotiations have resulted in a substantial delay to the 2007/08
season but I'm pleased to say that we're finally off and running and awaiting the
draw and details.
I'd like to take this time to publically thank Vaughan McClear and Mahesh Malani
for their untiring efforts at getting cricket operating with an unwavering focus
on everybody enjoying a fair and just cricket environment in Bangkok. Much appreciated
from the Parrots fellas
We embark on our 4th shot at the Bangkok Premier league title and have a few pleasant jaunts up our sleeve to keep the flock in cricket and ensure the Galah of the year
award is well represented again this year.
We're off to Chiang Mai this weekend of the 15th Decmber to get things started and
to sample a bit of cool weather cricket that has the kiwis and poms a bit excited.
We also hope to relocate our keenly fought Town and Country Trophy from it's
current peaceful rural setting to the bright lights and glam of the City of Angels.
If anybody is free (despite the incredibly short notice, for which I have no doubt that a vodka will be coming my way) for a refreshing weekend in the North please
let me know and we'll arrange a game of cricket or golf or anything that you fancy
(within reason Foxy!).
We'd love to have you join us.
Burma (or Myanmar, just like Sledges female companions, I always seem to use the
wrong nom de plume) beckons and Stu, our Kiwi contact in Yangon, is dead keen for
us to restore some normalcy and give the locals something to look forward to with
another Parrots trip. I'll keep you posted on these developments and any safety
issues, but this could be a good chance for the Club to make a tangible contribution
to improving the plight of these wonderful people in the form of donations or assistance.
Any suggestions from you would be greatly appreciated.
The Phuket lads stumbled into Neil's bar the other day, so consider that another
contact made and it'd only be polite for us to pop down there sometime soon.
We've also got the feelers out for trips to Cambodia, Jakarta, Vietnam and Penang
so the prospects look good again from the perch.
Other proposed fixtures include games against the Thaigers Aussie rules team and
the Bangers Golden Oldies Rugby Club in a possible three way 20/20 day with the
Southerners
Committee 2007/08
We had a long and thorough AGM with the following appointments:
President: Gary Chatfield
Secretary/ Club Captain: Richard Bowater
Treasurer : Neil Pawsey
Tours Manager: Nick Chomonter
Chiang Mai Representative; Dean Henderson
General Committee: Mike Strunk
: Mark Scully
positions to be filled: Assistant Treasurer (two people is best for this job) and
Membership Secretary.
Many many thanks to all of last years committee members and special mention to Paul
Clarke who was simply outsatnding as Assistant treasurer and Membership secretary.
By the way, the official figures for our game day 'mini bar" takings throughout
the season were simply phenomenal and this is an area where the club can be very
proud indeed! Well done people!
Sponsors
We're delighted to have our wonderful sponsors back on board again this year including
Green Parrot Sportsbar
Global Turf Consulting
Regal Guesthouse Jomtien
Please bear these sponsors in mind if you ever require their services
Membership
We are currently printing our new cards for this season thanks to Jake and Regal
Guesthouse Jomtien and I'll let you know when you can change to this years'
memberships.
Kids Cricket:
While the old fellas have been embroiled in cricket debate, I'm pleased to report
that the young fellas have been getting games and cricket experiences.
The Prez organised for the Parrots to take two young fellas from Chiang Mai to Penang
for the Penang sixes tornament. Joseph, Strunky and Sledge and Pen accompanied the
boys on the weekend trip which they enjoyed immensely. The Prez reported that the
whole experience was a total success and our two young jetsetters have returned
to their villages with tales of abroad (as opposed to Sledge who returned to Jakarta
with tales of broads!).
Thanks to all Members, your membership subs paid for this cricket experience - certainly something we would like to repeat as often as possible.
Junior Cricket development remains an important aspect to the Parrots and is where
your 500 baht memberships go.
Well folks like I said earlier, a very odd start to the season over here and with
our practise facillities out of order until January it looks like a possible start
in the New Year for all things Parrot and Cricket seems to have finally arrived.
Luckily we thrive in disorganised conditions so place a lazy fiver on us this season
and we'll see if we can't give you a bit of a surprise.
Umpires Corner...
Question:
What happens if the batsmen walks up the pitch before
you bowl and you bowl it over their head is it a no-ball?
Cheers,
Merry Christmas and we'll see you in 08!
Kiwi
ps Sledge copped a bit this time eh?
Umpire's Corner answer:apparently
When a batsman moves it does make it a bit harder for the umpires as they still have to work out where the ball would have gone through and also make a call as
to whether
what has happened is fair. Generally the call will favour the batsman.
However, a full toss over his head would have to be a no ball and a bouncer would
be called too (either a wide or no ball depending on the type of playing conditions
in use and the repetition).
